Children at the Castle

We are delighted to welcome children of all ages to the castle and there are many places to visit and things to do at the castle and in the local area for families.   

There are 36 acres of beautiful gardens in which to play, as well as a tennis court, a croquet lawn, and miles of woodland walks where the family might see rabbits, hares, red deer, roe deer, red squirrels, hawks, falcons, woodpeckers and owls.

We also have a wide selection of books, DVDs, videos and games for young children.

In the Local Area

• Children are welcome to swim with their parents at the nearby spa, a five-minute drive from the castle, or visit the seal rocks at nearby Lendalfoot.
• As an outing for the day, we recommend, ‘Cream o’ Galloway’ (click to view the Cream O'Galloway web site) an organic dairy farm which makes and sells luxury ice cream as well as having an adventure playground and family nature trails, with a visit to the Gem and Rock Museum (click to view the Gem and Rock Museum web site) on the way back to the castle.
• Culzean Castle and Country Park provides yet more beautiful gardens, a play park for younger children, nature walks, and of course the magnificent castle itself. 
• Turnberry Activity Centre, with archery, quad biking, horse riding – and of course, golf will challenge and delight older children, while the Animal Farm Park near Ayr (click to view the Animal Farm Park web site)  is ideal for younger children.   
• Boat Trips to Ailsa Craig, sea fishing and loch fishing for trout (with tuition) can also be arranged.
• Heading south from the castle, Logan Fish Pond (click to view the Logan Fish Pond web site) and The Mull of Galloway (click to view the Mull of Galloway web site) provide another half-day children’s tour, with a stop for lunch or afternoon tea in Portpatrick. 
• To the east, the vast Galloway Forest Park (click to view the Galloway Forest Park web site) provides many more walks, cycle tracks (click to view the 7 Stanes web site) and nature trails.

Accommodation for Children

• Our ground floor garden view Family Suite, with two interconnecting bedrooms, each with its own en suite bathroom, is particularly suitable for parents with more than one child, while our ‘East Wing Suites’ have very comfortable double sofa beds in the sitting room. 
• In addition, most of our rooms can accommodate one or more roll-away beds. Please ask at the time of booking.
• Children may also be accommodated in their own guest rooms at full adult rate.

Meals for Children and Teenagers.

• Our dining rooms are open to children of all ages for breakfast and lunch.
• In the evenings, we serve our junior menu from 5.30pm to 6.30pm in the McMillan Dining Room (click to view a Typical Junior Menu).
• Service of our six course main dinner menu begins at 7.00pm and well-behaved children aged five and over are very welcome to join their parents in the dining room to enjoy this menu, or a shortened version if preferred. 
• We ask that young children who are not dining with their parents, are not present in the castle drawing room after 7.00pm.  We are happy to arrange baby listening, babysitters and childminders, as well as high chairs and cots.
