in Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.
The Stranraer based family business of HC McMillan & Sons, father Hammy, Drew, Billy and young Hammy newly returned from Canada opened the North West Castle in April 1962 with 12 bedrooms. The hotel saw many developments commencing with the addition of 20 bedrooms, dining room and ballroom in 1964, ice rink in 1970, additional 52 bedroom, swimming pool, games room and conference facilities in 1975 with various additions and improvements leaving the hotel with 72 bedrooms. The family business split up in 1980 and the boys went there own ways. Hammy & Janet continued to run the North West Castle and formed McMillan Hotels which purchased the Cally Palace Hotel in September 1981, Kirroughtree House in July 1992, Fernhill Hotel in December 1998, Glenapp Castle opened in April 2000 and more recently Peebles Hydro and the Park Hotel, Peebles in November 2004.
We intend to put together a timeline to show how North West Castle and McMillan Hotels have developed over the last 50 years. We hope to include what has been done and achieved during our time in each hotel. To help us celebrate this Golden Anniversary, we would appreciate help from any customers, relations, employees past or present and suppliers who have any stories, memorabilia (photos, receipts, menus etc. or anything whatsoever that could be recorded in our timeline. We would record all items and of course, return them.
