North West Castle roars into action for curling new brooms
The first hotel in the world to have its own indoor curling rink has launched a drive to attract more people to take up the ‘roaring game’.
The North West Castle in Stranraer, managed by ex-World Champion Hammy McMillan junior, has introduced ‘Learn to Curl’ courses which include dinner, bed and breakfast plus tuition from qualified coaches, starting from £108 per person.
But the hotel, which opened its indoor ice rink in 1970, says its campaign is also aimed at people simply wanting a couple of hours fun and relaxation.
"Curling is a very sociable activity and great for a wide range of ages,” said Ilene Park, ice rink secretary and a coach.
"It’s suitable for everyone from around 11years old and we have people still curling into their 80s.
" All sessions are friendly and informal."
"“We’re keen to see many more people throughout Scotland and the North of England having a go at this exciting sport,” said McMillan Hotels’ Director Douglas McMillan.
"“We’re offering the opportunity to try out the game in a comfortable indoor setting and if people want professional tuition we can provide that as well."
Two nights dinner, bed and breakfast weekends at North West Castle with a buffet lunch on both days and a minimum of three games of curling cost from £108 per person (based on two sharing) with extra nights charged at just £38.
The rate also includes dinner dances held on Saturday nights. Children sharing their parents’ room are charged just £30 up to four years of age and £60 from ages five to 15.
Older and less mobile people are benefiting from a new device called a cue - a long pole which hooks onto the stone so players do not have to bend when they push it forward on the ice.
